AMAZON Prime Day has just kicked off! And as is the always the way, some of the best deals are on Amazon’s very own devices.
Prime members can pick up the latest-generation Echo Dot smart speaker for £24.99, down from £54.99 – so if you buy two, that’s actually better than a two-for-one deal.
Echo Dot (5th generation), £24.99 (was £54.99)
For Amazon Prime Day, the entire Echo speaker range has been slashed in price, from Dots to to Pops to Shows to the all-new Spot, which has been launched an introductory price of £49.99.
I bought a pair of 5th-gen Echo Dots in a similar deal a couple of Prime Days ago. Being honest, I wasn’t expecting much from them.
I was in the middle of moving house, and I had a lot of new stuff to buy – I just figured a pair of these little devices gadgets offer my one-bed flat some quick and cost-effective stereo.
I knew it might be useful having Alexa to boss around, summon up weather reports, and tell me the latest news – but in terms of the audio quality, I doubt these mini-size Echo speakers would offer much.
But, while they’re certainly not premium devices, I was pleasantly surprised at the levels of sound the Dots delivered.
Amazon claims to have worked hard at improving the bass levels and overall sound profiles of its Dot speakers, which have completely surpassed the standard Echo in popularity in recent years.
Honestly, if you’re looking for multi-room playback at a low cost, you can do far worse than a pair of these.
What’s really handy is that in the Alexa app, you can give each Dot a different name (mine, somewhat unimaginatively, are called ‘Living Room’ and ‘Kitchen’).
If you want them to play at the same time, you need to create and name a group in the same app – ‘Entire home’, perhaps – and then you can command Alexa to play from one or both of them.
These days, I find the multi-room approach most useful when I’m pottering around at home – I can listen to music and podcasts in one room and then pause the playback, and then get Alexa to start it up again in another room.
This same kind of versatility also applies to the Echo Dots Kids, which has been slashed from £64.99 to £29.99.
